Soil

The area is renown in the area for its heavy clay soil, in the past the clay has been dug for bricks, there was a possible pit in the area of the trial beds, which has been filled in over a number of years. This is the soil test pit dug for bed A2 (traditional bed), it is 600mm deep, showing 4 layers, which are individual below. A few meters away there is water to the soil surface, as you can see in the bottom of the hole no standing water, this was a surprise. Soil was workable if a little stick. This is layer one, is between 0 - 150mm from the surface down. The turf has been placed face down to show the soil. A loamy clay with a good population of worms and, and grass roots to a depth past 100mm..   This thin line is layer two, is between 150 - 180mm from the surface. This is a clay layer varying in thickness from around 30mm (left picture) to 200mm in the right picture, there is some small stone and burnt bits.
